Mrs Karen Reid                      Mrs Hollie Ward

Year 6 is an important year for our pupils. It is a transitional year from Primary to Secondary school and their last year with us at Malcolm Sargent School. During Year 6, we balance a strong focus on the core subjects of Reading, Writing and Maths with a rich and varied year group curriculum covering every other subject too! Year 6 also provides our pupils with many opportunities for personal growth in preparation for the next steps in their educational journey. Year six is a challenging but exciting year.

As role models for the younger age groups, our children follow and demonstrate the Malcolm Sargent Way.  As they become more independent, we inspire children to be active learners and take responsibility for their learning.  We encourage all pupils to listen, follow our school rules and complete their work to the best of their ability.

In Year Six we have the SATs (statutory assessment tests) in May, and we work really hard to ensure that all the children have the best opportunity possible to achieve their full potential. These tests represent the children’s understanding of the primary curriculum.  We also try to ensure that we have fun along the way and provide the children with some lovely lasting memories.

The year concludes with our eagerly-anticipated three-day residential trip to PGL near Grantham, where our children experience a range of exciting outdoor activities. They will blossom and thrive across the three days, gaining confidence and achieving things they never thought they would have achieved at the outset.

Y6 provides opportunities for children to develop their interests and passions. Many of our year group proudly represent the school, competing in a wide range sports teams from Football to Boccia.  For our budding thespians, there’s the opportunity to be part of a Y6 end of year play with props, scenery & costumes created in Art Club. Meanwhile, our singers enjoy performing with the School’s highly successful choir.  Children can contribute to the wider school by putting themselves forward as candidates for positions of responsibility such as House Captains or Green Team Reps.

How can you help your child?

We believe that children should be encouraged to learn at home as well as in school, developing life-long skills in being organised, responsible, self-motivated and independent. Our aim is to teach children to improve their approach and motivation over their time at school, raising their awareness and ability to manage homework, in preparation for secondary school and beyond.  Encourage your child to have a positive attitude towards learning at home and to take responsibility for their homework schedule.  Encourage a love of reading, confidence in maths and self-help skills in spelling.

If you would like to know any more about the detail of the topics that we will be covering in Year 6 and our learning progression, you can explore our current term’s curriculum offer, found on the curriculum offer tab of this section. The first page details a standard timetable for your child this half-term, with an overview of the exciting topics, skills and knowledge being covered in each subject. We hope that this provides you with a detailed and useful look into your child’s learning, but if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
